The Red Zone

What is it?

A sustained period of independent practice every lesson where students work in complete silence on the most challenging task of the lesson.

Key Features of the ‘Red Zone’

  1. There is a ‘Red zone ‘ task every lesson.
  2. Students work in complete silence as it helps concentration. (There may be occasions in practical subjects such as Drama, Music and PE where the task requires students to speak).
  3. The task will make students think hard.
  4. ‘Memory is the residue of thought’: The harder students are made to think, the more it helps them to store it in their memory.
  5. The tasks are likely to focus on students applying and transferring their knowledge and making connections with previously learnt content. This helps them to store it in their long-term memory.
